Continuing the conversation on etiquette with a final excerpt from the Ladies Book of Etiquette and Manual of Politeness:

"Politeness, being based upon real kindness of heart, cannot exist where there is selfishness or brutality to warp its growth. It is founded upon love of the neighbor, and a desire to be loved, and to show love. Thus, where such pure, noble feelings do not exist, the mere forms of politeness become hypocracy and deceit."

Yesterday, I promised to wrap up the conversation with my own thoughts about how this relates to afternoon tea. On the first day, I was lamenting that our society has lost something and it has diminished us. That something is politeness. Not just the outward facade of politeness, ("Yes, Ma'am" and "No, Sir") still seen in parts of the country; rather, true politeness as described in the book--based on the condition of the heart.

Etiquette and politeness are bound together because the first dictates that some form of the latter be employed. Afternoon tea is a great vehicle to teach the basics of etiquette, to discuss the concept of true politeness, and then, to practice hospitality.

It's not too late to reverse the course of our self-centered society. Start the trasformation. Invite a young person to tea.

Continuing the conversation about the importance and essence of etiquette:

"Many believe that politeness is just a mask worn in the world to conceal bad passions and impulses, and to make a show of possessing virtues not really existing in the heart; thus, that politeness is merely hypocrisy and dissimulation. Do not believe this; be certain that those who profess such a doctrine are practising themselves the deceit they condemn so much. Such people scout politeness, because, to be truly a lady one must carry the principles into every circumstance of life, into the family circle, the most intimate friendship, and never forget to extend the gentle courtesies of life to everyone. This they find too much trouble, and so deride the idea of being polite and call it deceitfulness.

True politeness is the language of a good heart, and those possessing that heart will never, under any circumstances, be rude. They may not enter a crowded saloon (a large room or hall for receptions, public entertainment, or exhibitions) gracefully; they may be entirely ignorant of the forms of good society; they may be awkward at table, ungrammatical in speech; but they will never be heard speaking so as to wound the feelings of another; they will never be seen making others uncomfortable by seeking solely for their own personal convenience; they will always endeavor to set every one around them at ease; they will be self-sacrificing, friendly, unselfish; truly in word and deed, polite. Give to such a woman the knowledge of the forms and customs of society, teach her how to best show the gentle courtesies of life, and you have a lady, created by God, only indebted for the outward polish to the world."

Etiquette--(noun) a code of behavior that delineates expectations for social behavior according to contemporary conventional norms within a society, social class or group.

I was thinking about how much things have changed in my lifetime. More specifically, the social graces or etiquette (or lack thereof) in our culture. What prompted my musings? While searching for a guide to tea etiquette, I ran across a book from the mid-19th century, The Ladies' Book of Etiquette, Fashion and Manual of Politeness: A Complete Handbook for the Use of the Lady In Polite Society by Florence Hartley. Her introduction is one of the most thought-provoking passages that I have read. Try as I might, I cannot help but feel saddened that this line of thought is so far from the norm today.

An excerpt:
In preparing a book of etiquette for ladies, I would lay down the first rule, "Do unto others as you would others should do to you." You can never be rude if you bear the rule always in mind, for what lady likes to be treated rudely? True Christian politeness will always be the result of an unselfish regard for the feelings of others, and though you may err in the ceremonious points of etiquette, you will never be impolite.

Politeness, founded upon such a rule, becomes the expression, in graceful manner, of social virtues. The spirit of politenessconsists in a certain attention to forms and ceremonies, which are meant both to please others and ourselves, and to make others pleased with us; a still clearer definition may be given by saying that politeness is goodness of heart put into daily practice; there can be no true politeness without kindness, purity, singleness of heart, and sensibility.

Tea In Texas

The May/June issue of Tea in Texas has just arrived. What a wonderful cover! I always enjoy the travel articles--they are always about places that are close to my heart and an enticement to take a weekend trip. A nice addition this month is a new feature, 2011 Best Tea Products. Imagine my surprise when I spotted my Afternoon Tea Society ( a subscription tea party service) listed! Wow!

If you live in North Texas, be sure to make plans to attend the 2011 Texas Tea Affair in Richardson on June 5. I attended last year with my daughter and we had a wonderful time! This year's featured speaker is author Millie Coleman, who will speak on the History of American Tea Rooms. Bavarian Tea Set

Last weekend I stopped by an estate sale in my neighborhood. I mainly went out of curiosity. The home has been bought and sold several times over the 19 years that we have lived down the street. I had never been inside this house, nor knew the most recent owners. I only knew that they were elderly.

As I walked from room to room, I began to feel a sense of regret that I had never taken the time to knock on the door and introduce myself. I could see that the lady of the house must have been a very elegant woman. I think we would have had much in common. The kitchen and dining room were full of crystal, china, and fine linens. Fine antique furniture graced every room. Her closets held evening gowns, shoes, beaded purses, and gloves. The bookshelves were laden with classic literature, fashion magazines from distant eras, and cookbooks. A bedroom had been converted into a sewing room which also held hat-making equipment. And tea sets were in every room.

If I had the resources, I would have bought it all. However, I could not, so I chose a few of the most beautiful pieces. My favorite--a handpainted Bavarian luncheon set for two:

One year later

One year ago today, my father called in the wee hours of the morning to tell me that my mom had passed away. A few hours later, I was on an airplane headed to Houston. We buried my mom on Monday. On Tuesday I was asked to speak at another memorial service the following day. What I wrote was an attempt to capture the essence of who she was. She was everything I said, but try as I might, I could not find the words to express who she was to me. She was my Mom. She gave birth to me. Held me. Nurtured me. Fussed at me. Bragged about me. Nagged me. Encouraged me. Questioned me. Advised me. Taught me. Cried with me. Laughed with me. Hugged me. Butted heads with me. Sacrificed for me. Loved me…unconditionally.

It’s been a year and my heart still hurts from the hole that she left.
And from
     questions I cannot ask her;
          things I cannot tell her;
               hugs I cannot give her…yet.

But someday we will be together again…and then I will.

RJR Afternoon Tea Fabrics

It's that time of year--school started yesterday. My baby is a senior in high school. She has a busy year ahead and I will be involved on many levels with her. I don't want to miss out on any opportunity to be a part of her life, to share the fun, to be there for the teachable moments.

This has been a year of introspection for me. It's been a year of looking at my priorities and what is really important. I have come to understand that relationships are more important than anything: my relationship to God, my family, and others.

Relationships take time and effort. They require a giving of self, of setting aside time to spend with someone--listening, talking, sharing, serving.

"Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in it's various forms." 1 Peter 4: 9-10

What does hospitality look like? It can be as simple as inviting an elderly neighbor or a new friend into our home for a cup of tea and a freshly baked scone. Or, packing a thermos of hot water, a couple of tea mugs, a few cookies, and tea to a housebound friend or new mother. Or, inviting your Bible Study group to your home for a tea party. Or, letting your daughter invite her group of friends over for a new experience--a full afternoon tea that she has helped plan and prepare. A teachable moment...

How to Plan Your Tea Party Menu

I have planned and hosted a church Mother/Daughter Tea for 300, but most often I plan smaller parties for 6-8. Regardless of size, when planning a tea party menu, I always start by asking myself 5 questions:

How many people will I invite?

What type of tea am I planning (cream, light, traditional)?

What is my food budget allowance?

Will I prepare all the food myself or cater all or a portion?

How will I serve--by myself, with help, or buffet-style?

Once you have determined the answers to the questions of size, type and budget (money and time), it is time to think about the actual menu. Depending on your focus, you can approach this from two directions:

1. Start with the tea you will serve.

2. Start with the theme and foods items.

Many tea enthusiasts plan a tea party menu around the tea to be served, with the foods selected to compliment to the tea. Others prefer to plan a tea event with a specific theme, having certain foods already in mind and then selecting the tea to complement the food and theme. Either way is fine, as it is really a matter of personal preference.

A Ballerina Tea Party

Sweet Necessi-Teas Afternoon Tea Society

Planning tea parties is what I love to do. Even before a party plan is finished, I am thinking about the next one. And so, last month, when I began to think about a theme for my next tea party, I ventured out one afternoon in search of inspiration. As I went from one antique shop to the next, I noticed that every piece I was drawn towards had one thing in common—roses. Suddenly a thought came to me: Tea and roses—like Tracy and Hepburn-- just seem to belong together. And just as quickly as the thought took shape, I knew what the theme of my next tea party would be… roses.

That settled, I began to think about the mood and setting. What I pictured in my mind was an elegant tea party set in an English rose garden. I purchased a few items, then scoured my attic, cabinets and shop storeroom for the rest. Everything came together seamlessly, with one exception—the rose garden setting. The location I had planned on using is filled with early-blooming antique rose bushes. By the time I had everything ready to photograph, the blooms were gone. So, instead, I moved the party to my dining room and created an indoor rose garden tea. And, I was not the least bit disappointed in the results!

Ready to host your own rose garden-themed tea party? Pull out your linen, china, silver, and crystal. If you have a rose garden, you may want to set up outside, weather permitting. Ask your guests to wear a rose-trimmed hat just for fun. Keep the food simple and be prepared to enjoy the day!

1930's Austrian Porcelain Child's Tea Set

A couple of weeks ago, I was spending a day with my daughter, hitting our favorite antique shops, and look what I found:

This vintage porcelain child's tea set was made in Austria in the 1930's. Each piece features a delicate blue and white floral pattern with thin blue line accents on spout and handles. A green overglaze stamp on each piece reads, "Porzellanfabrick Arzberg Arzberg (Bayern)" which identifies the region of manufacture as Arzberg, Austria. The set includes a teapot, covered sugar, creamer, 4 tea cups and saucers, and 4 linen napkins (not original to the set) with a similar floral design. The set is in excellent condition. There is a small flea bite on the inside rim of the sugar bowl and I am not sure that the sugar bowl lid is original, as it differs in design from the teapot lid. However, the color is right and it fits... Too sweet!

Blue and white seems to be the hot new trend, again! Of course, I never stopped loving it...

I just received my copy of the July/August issue of Tea In Texas, a regional tea magazine that I advertise in. As a new advertiser this spring, I was given an opportunity to be interviewed and have a short write-up to introduce my shop to the readership. I asked if I could submit an article in lieu of the interview. When permission was granted, I put the finishing touches on a tea party plan that I had been working on and hired a photographer friend to take professional photographs. (I have always done my own photography, but this opportunity called for something a bit better!) I submitted everything to the editor and hoped that she would publish at least part of it with a couple of the photos. A month went by and I didn't hear from her, so I began to wonder if she was going to use it at all...

The publication date came and went with no word. Last week I finally got up the nerve to ask my ad rep. if she had heard anything. She said that the issue was published and that she was waiting for her copies to arrive for distribution to her clients. She called back near the end of the week to say that the box had arrived and my article "was on page 12 and was very pretty". We agreed to meet at a nearby tea room so that I could get a few advance copies. I held my breath and hoped for the best. When she handed me a magazine opened to page 12, my heart skipped more than a few beats and my breath was taken away. There before me was a 2-page spread of my complete plan, White Lace and Promises--A Bridal Tea Party, and several photos, all enhanced by lovely ribbon and rose graphics. "Very pretty" does not even come close--it is gorgeous!

I'm not sure if my feet will ever touch the ground again...

Anna, the Duchess of Bedford is credited with starting the custom of afternoon tea in the early 19th century. One afternoon she experienced a “sinking feeling” at about four, several hours before dinnertime, served at the fashionably late hour of eight. Not wishing to burden the kitchen staff, she requested “just a cup of tea with a slice of cake”. Refreshed and revived, she began to order her afternoon tea daily. Soon friends were joining her for this late afternoon delight, and the ritual spread. By the Victorian era it had become an elaborate social gathering with tarts, pastries, and even little sandwiches.

Today we have the freedom to follow the tradition of an ordered, formal occasion, or make afternoon tea a more informal, yet graceful occasion. Either way, it is a wonderful way to refresh body and mind and celebrate friendship.

In this fast-paced world we live in, taking time to smell the roses or spending time with loved ones over a cup of tea is a respite that refreshes. My hope is that I can inspire you do just that through The Sweet Necessi-Teas Afternoon Tea Society!

no "I love you, Mom" to say.

but both--

Mom first, then Barbara.

How did this happen?

It wasn't supposed to be like this--

both gone

within just a few months

of each other.

No time to grieve

or get used to the thought

of no Mom...

and the other was gone.

Tea Storage Tips

Have you ever wondered how long you can store tea? In general, the less oxidized the leaf, the faster it will lose flavor when exposed to air. Black teas and darker oolongs tend to retain flavor longer, even up to two years! General guidelines are:

White Tea--1 year

Green Tea-- 1 year

Oolong Tea--1-2 years

Black Tea--2 years

For optimal flavor and freshness:

Do not store your tea over the stove. It may be convenient, but the heat and steam are not a good environment.

Excessive heat, odors, moisture, air, and light exposure can forever alter the character of your tea.

Teas should be stored in an airtight, dark, odor-free, and moisture-free environment.

Room temperature is fine for most tea.

Most tins are not airtight. If you store tea in a tin canister, seal it in a resealable bag first.

Have you read the 2nd issue of Victorian Etc yet? It was released on April 1st (no fooling!). I am just tickled to have the feature article again--my Victorian Easter Tea Party plan. But, it was the editor's note on Steampunk Light that really caught my interest. Steampunk Light???? I had never heard the term before. A New Spring Look!

Spring is in the air! Daffodils and irises are blooming, the redbuds and pear trees are putting on their spring show of bright pink and white respectively, the grass is starting to turn green. I even have a few roses on my rose bushes. The drabness of winter is gone and everything looks fresh and new.

I, too, have been feeling the need to refresh and renew. First, I re-worked my Dress Tea Cozies and Tea Cup Covers. I added more lace and additional embellishments to make them more Victorian in style.

Next, I looked for a way to refresh my Rose Tea Cozies and Rosebud Tea Cup Cozies. I used a bit of soft sculpture to give them more dimension. A fun new detail is the clear bead used in sculpting the rose that adds a dew-kissed look. And, I am now offering a butterfly pin that can be pinned on to add a touch of whimsey!

I have been so happy with these changes that I am looking for more things to spruce up. If you haven't been by the shop in awhile, I hope you'll pop in soon and browse awhile.

A Treasure Hunt

Last week, my daughter and I took a trip to Houston. I love road trips! Though we could have flown in and arrived quicker, we would have missed the opportunity to hunt for treasure in all the small towns along the way. Flea markets, antique shops and junk shops abound, but rarely do I have the time to scavenge. So scavenge we did! And we were not disappointed. My favorite find? Have a look: This 50+year old tea set in pristine condition must have been put away in a china cabinet for a special occasion and never used. The 17-piece porcelain tea set, made in Germany by the Thomas Porcelain factory in 1953, includes a 24 oz. teapot, covered sugar, creamer, and 6 demitasse sized cup and saucer sets. What was it about the set that caught my eye and captured my heart? Everything! The graceful, clean lines that offer a refreshing simplicity. Subtle ridges in the ivory porcelain that form a backdrop for delicate pink rose sprays. Hand-painted 22 kt. gold detailing that catches the gleam of sunlight or flicker of candlelight. It is absolutely gorgeous and has absolutely no cracks, crazing, chips, wear, or age-related flaws.

Vintage Rose Cottage

May I have the priviledge to introduce you to an old friend, "Rose"? If you have followed my blog or have been a customer for awhile, you will recognize her photo. When I started my tea accessory business, Sweet Necessi-Teas, she was in the logo designed by Cathy at Avalon Rose. Last January, I decided that a new look was needed and "Rose" took an extended leave of absence.

Last summer, I brought her back to head up a new company, Vintage Rose Cottage. However, before I could get the company going, my personal life took a couple of detours. In the course of the last 7 months I have lost the two most important women in my life, my mom and mother-in-law. "Rose" graciously waited in the wings until I could begin again.

As winter has given way to Spring, my spirits have, too. Creative inspiration began to bubble up and I began anew. Over the last few weeks, I have been gathering products, taking photos, and getting the shop ready for visitors. I am very excited about this new venture and hope that you will find inspiration for your romantic home or nook. Please feel free to drop in and see what we have been doing at Vintage Rose Cottage. Victorian Dress Tea Cozy

Every Spring I get the urge to buy a new dress. It must have something to do with my Southern upbringing and Easter.

Every year in early March, my mom would take me shopping for a new outfit, which included a dress, frilly socks, white patent leather shoes, gloves, purse and a hat. Of course, I couldn't wear it until Easter Sunday, but that just made it even more special. Anticipation... I couldn't wear it, but I could try it on and admire myself in front of the dresser mirror. (I had to climb up on the bed to see my full reflection...) It was my favorite time of year!

I still buy myself a new outfit for Easter, but even I don't wear dresses as much as I once did. My daughter and I were lamenting the fact that our society has become so casual. We were talking about a company in England that hires out vintage teaware for formal tea parties. I mentioned that I would love to do that, but didn't think it would flourish in our area. People don't even get dressed up for church anymore. She remarked that she and her friends longed for an occasion to put on a dress. I don't know if my girly-at-heart daughter and her girly-at-heart friends are exceptions, but I hope there are more out there.

Perhaps it is time for a dress up tea party...

I am in the middle of planning a Victorian Easter Tea that will be featured in a new e-magazine, Victorian Etc. Magazine, soon. My favorite part of planning is the tablescape. I love to rummage in my cabinets and pull out treasures from the past and then go shopping for new items to mix with the old. Sometimes my "new" items are from antique shops, but sometimes they are vintage reproductions.

Next, I gather everything that I think might work and start "playing". Sometimes it comes together right away, but usually it takes a few combinations. This time it was more than a few, but what fun I had!

As usual, I found lots of sweet Easter goodies that I did not use. Most of them are one-of-a-kind. I have just listed them in my shop--just in time for your Easter tea party planning. I have spotlighted a couple below.

A few months ago, my mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer. Recently, we were told that, in spite of radiation and chemotherapy treatments, the cancer had spread to the liver and bones. She lost her battle with this disease early this morning.

While contemplating my relationship with this special woman, my thoughts were drawn to another pair of women who shared a special bond, Naomi and Ruth. Their story is in the Book of Ruth in the Bible.

As the story opens, a man, Eliminech, takes his wife, Naomi, and two sons to a foreign country, Moab, to live when a severe famine strikes his homeland, Bethlehem in Judea. As time passes, Eliminech dies, and each of the sons marry women from Moab. After a few more years, both sons die, leaving the three women behind with no male family member to provide for them.

With no means of support, Naomi decides to go back home to Bethlehem to try to find refuge with her husband’s kin. Both daughters-in-law, Orpah and Ruth, decide to go with her rather than be separated from her. Naomi pleads with them to stay and try to find new husbands and start new families. Orpah tearfully agrees to stay, but Ruth will not. Her passionate speech to Naomi as she pledges her love and allegiance is one of the most well known passages in the Bible. “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God will be my God.” The passage closes with, “When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped urging her.”

The story continues, they return to Bethlehem, and Ruth remarries—one of her husband’s relatives. She eventually has a son who becomes the grandfather of King David. But, what caught my attention is the “back story.”

Names in Biblical times were chosen carefully and were descriptive. Naomi’s name meant “pleasant; lovely.” Indeed, the story indicates that she was a beautiful woman, but the description must have been much deeper than looks. Physical beauty will attract men, but only a pleasant and lovely personality and countenance can account for the deep relationship between this mother-in-law and her daughters-in-law. Orpah left weeping. The love Ruth felt for Naomi was so deep that she left everything behind to go to a foreign country with the mother of her husband.

Naomi reminds me of my mother-in-law, Barbara. She was a beautiful woman outwardly, but even more so inwardly. She was pleasant and lovely. Happy. Fun-loving. Optimistic. Kind. Selfless. Giving. Warm. Open. Accepting. Loving. Brave.

Barbara’s name meant “different” and she was—different from other mothers-in-law. As Naomi was to Ruth, Barbara was to me. More than a mother-in-law, she was a second mother and friend. And I will miss her...

I have just finished taking my Christmas decorations down. It's a 3 day process just for the inside and another day or 2 for the outside. Kind of looks bland now... But, this is the perfect time for a makeover. The house is clean and I have a fresh palette, so to speak.

I live in a pink Victorian-style home. I am a romantic-at-heart, so my thoughts naturally drift towards the next romantic holiday--Valentine's Day. Reds, pinks, vintage Valentine post cards, pearls, lace, hats, hearts--all swirl in my head until an idea forms. Why not have a Victorian Valentine's Day Tea?

I begin the hunt through cupboards, drawers, linen armoire, and nooks and crannies for everything I will need. I start with a recent shopping find, a small Victorian-themed trunk, and an idea for a centerpiece takes shape in my head.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. We had a winter storm on Christmas Eve and for the first time (at least since we moved here in 1985) had a White Christmas in Dallas. It was beautiful!

The storm slowed things down and my family had time to reflect on the true meaning of the day and how richly we have been blessed. Though this has been a hard year with the loss of my mom and my dear mother-in-law's battle with cancer, we are mindful that we have much to be thankful for.

I want to take a moment and say thank you to my dear customers for your business. I look forward to serving you again in 2010.

Festive Shortbread Logs

1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
4 teaspoons shortening
3/4 cup ground walnuts

Directions
In a mixing bowl, cream butter and confectioners' sugar. Add vanilla. Gradually add flour; mix well.
With lightly floured hands, shape tablespoonfuls into 2-in. logs. Place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees F for 9-11 minutes or until edges and bottom are lightly browned. Cool for 2-3 minutes before removing to wire racks.
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips and shortening; stir until smooth. Drizzle chocolate over half of the cookies. Dip one end of remaining cookies into chocolate, then sprinkle with walnuts.

She battled and overcame cancer twice,
endured several serious illnesses,
struggled with depression,
and lived with severe back pain for the last few years of her life.

Her life was not easy. Yet, she was not bitter or angry with God.
She always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everybody she came in contact with. She enjoyed the little pleasures in life. She loved to laugh. She loved her family and her friends.

She gave her life to Christ when she was 16 and felt the call to missionary service. Though she served in a formal capacity for only 2 years (as a teacher in Dulac, LA), she never lost sight, nor tired of fulfilling her calling in life.

Who was my mom?

She was the hands and feet of Christ. In the end, she, like Paul, could say: “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith.”

And, when she left this world in the wee hours on Oct. 30th, I have no doubt that Jesus greeted her with “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Apostle Spoon and Tong Set

I was at an estate sale this week and ran across this boxed set of demi-spoons and sugar tongs. The label said "Apostle Spoon and Tong Set." I am always looking for something unusual for my customers and this set peaked my curiosity. I had never heard of Apostle Spoons, so I removed one carefully from its vintage box to examine it more closely. The handle ended with a figure of a robed man. Hmmm. Looking for more clues, I turned it over to see what marks it bore. The handle was stamped "England" and the bowl of each spoon had an E and P stamped (also on the tongs). I was intrigued, so I bought the set.

When I got home I did a bit of internet research. Here's what I found:

"APOSTLE SPOONS, a set of spoons, usually of silver or silver gilt, with the handles terminating in figures of the apostles, each bearing their distinctive emblem. They were common baptismal gifts during the 15th and 16th centuries, but were dying out by 1666. Often single spoons were given, bearing the figure of the patron or name saint of the child. Sets of the twelve apostles are not common, and complete sets of thirteen, with the figure of our Lord on a larger spoon, are still rarer."

These are obviously not the rare spoons as described above. There are only 6 and are all alike with no specific emblem. However, I also found out that there was a resurgence of interest in Apostle Spoons in the 19th century and into the early to mid-20th century. This set was a result of that renewed interest. The stamps E and P stand for ElectroPlate (silverplate over brass most likely). They were made in the early to mid 20th century. The colors and patterns on the box lid suggest pre-1950. Since the set includes a sugar tong, it was most likely sold to be used for tea time--perhaps to be used in connection with baptism celebrations.

The set is in good condition--some slight wear and tarnishing. Even though they had a bit of wear and are not in mint condition, I just thought the set would make a great conversation starter. It would also make a great addition to someone's spoon collection (Christmas is coming!). I really love that the set is complete and in its original box!

High Tea received its name during the Victorian period when families would eat an evening meal of meats, bread, cheese, and other substantial foods along with tea. These were eaten at a high dining table--hence "High Tea".

Low Tea--the afternoon tea--was created as a time for a light snack with tea served in sitting rooms at the low tables near the sofa and chairs. Low Tea is actually the more formal tea.

With the arrival of September, our nesting instincts return. With the kids back in school, there is more time for yourself and to care for your living spaces. It's time to create a cozy fall home in preparation for cooler days...

A favorite vintage tablecloth spattered with hints of autumn flowers is pulled from the linen closet and ironed to get ready for the first guests.

The Cozy that Started It All

Many years ago, when my daughter was just a toddler, I loved to go thrifting with my best friend on Fridays. On one jaunt, we happened upon a warehouse sale near our favorite thrift store. The owner had cleaned out his elderly mother's attic and was still trying to get everything put out on tables. (He had underestimated the amount of stuff she had and was pretty overwhelmed, I think.) I saw some old hats peeking out of a yet-to-be unpacked box and asked him for a price on a couple. He said he would sell me the whole box for $10.00. I was thrilled--my daughter was going to have lots of dress-up hats!

When we got home, I dumped the contents out on the floor and started going through the hats, making sure there weren't any hat pins or small parts that would be dangerous. In the midst of the sorting, I came across the oddest hat I had ever seen. Upon closer examination, I realized it wasn't a hat at all--it was a tea cozy! It was made of silk and had a sheer, hand-embroidered organza cover, kind of like a pinafore. The thing that threw me was the thickness. It was stuffed with wool and the sides were about 1 1/2" thick. I had never seen one like it. (In Texas, most cozies are thin...)

I have no idea how old it is, who made it, or where it came from originally, but it captured my fancy. It matches a pair of orange and blue lusterware candlesticks that sit atop my china cabinet with other special treasures, so that is where it is displayed.

Mother's jewelry box is a treasure trove for little girls and grownup daughters. No matter what our age, our imaginations become colorful and childlike when we open her box of secrets. An Autumn Tea

August is more than halfway over. School starts next week and I am looking at my calendar. It is already chock full of events related to my daughter's drill team schedule. Football games and fund raisers are penciled in nearly every week until December. I am wondering if I will find time for an Autumn Tea... I just have to find an open date! I found a couple of recipes that are just perfect for a chilly afternoon--Pumpkin Scones and Chai Tea Latte.

Hmmm...maybe a football game Tailgate Tea would be the answer. I'll let you know!

Pumpkin Scones

About 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
About 1/2 cup (1/4 lb.) butter or margarine, cut into chunks
3/4 cup canned pumpkin
1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon milk
1 large egg yolk
1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Preparation
In a bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt. Add 1/2 cup butter and, with a pastry blender or your fingers, cut or rub in until pea-size crumbs form. In another small bowl, whisk pumpkin and 1/2 cup milk until well blended. Add to flour mixture and stir just until dough is evenly moistened. Scrape onto a lightly floured board, turn over to coat, and gently knead just until dough comes together, 5 or 6 turns. Pat dough into a 6-inch round 1 1/2 inches thick; cut into 6 equal wedges. Separate wedges and place on a lightly buttered 12- by 15-inch baking sheet. In a small bowl, beat egg yolk and 1 tablespoon milk to blend; brush lightly over tops of scones (discard any remaining egg wash). In another small bowl, mix granulated sugar and remaining 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon; sprinkle evenly over scones. Bake in a 375° regular or convection oven until scones are golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes. Transfer to a rack; serve warm or cool.
Yield:Makes 6 scones

Chai Tea Latte

2 cups water
4 heaping teaspoons of loose leaf black tea
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp grated orange peel
8 whole cloves
4 black peppercorns
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
2 cups half and half or milk

Bring the water, sugar, and spices to the boil. Simmer for 10 minutes. Pour into a tea kettle with an infuser (or be prepared to strain later). Add tea to the infuser and submerge in the water. Allow to steep for 3 -5 minutes. Add vanilla extract.Meanwhile heat the half and half (or milk) just to a simmer. Pour carefully in blender and blend until frothy.Strain tea into heated mugs that have been filled halfway with frothed milk. Serves 4.

Getting it Right

I received a website comment via my guestbook this morning that made my day. She was a first time visitor and just wanted to let me know that she loved my site and was going to share it with someone else. What a great compliment! It made me feel so good to know that I put a smile on someone's face and that I am "getting it right" at least some of the time.

When I was at the World Tea Expo recently, I had the good fortune to have a booth next to Susan Rios. Traffic was slower than expected due to a number of things (the economy, swine flu over-reaction, and it being the week before Mother's Day), but that gave me time to observe how a successful person conducted business. The one thing that stood out--she talked to people. She asked questions. At one point, she was working on a product design and asked for input on the shape of a coaster. Someone asked her, "Well, which shape do you like best?" Her answer--"I'd rather get it right than be right."

What a profound statement! Here is a woman, so creative and talented, asking for opinions and making decisions based on that input. I knew right then that I had been gifted with a piece of advice that I should take to heart. And so I am...

What am I doing right? What needs improvement? What products would you like to see in my shop that I don't currently offer? I am interested in comments about my website as well as my products. I may not post them, but I promise to read your comments and take each one into consideration.

Iced Tea--A Cool Respite

Did you know that June is National Iced Tea Month? I don't know who decides these things, but they must have been to Dallas in June when the temperatures go from cool to hot overnight! Summer has arrived in North Texas! The temps are in the high 90's and I am looking for ways to keep cool. That got me to thinking about cool drinks and, in particular, iced tea.

One of my favorite respites on hot summer afternoons is to pour myself a tall glass of iced tea and head for the front porch swing. There is generally a breeze blowing and I love to relax there with a good book. Often, a friend or 2 will stop by, so I always try to have a pitcher of tea made and a few goodies on hand for an impropmtu gathering.

Below, you will find directions for making iced tea. My hope is that you will find time in your busy day to head to your own porch or gazebo and enjoy a glass with a friend!

Iced Tea

There are a number of ways to make the perfect iced tea. When making iced tea, you may use your favorite black, green or flavored teas or tisanes (herbal teas). However, Ceylon and Keemun do not go cloudy when left to stand. Iced tea can be made using both loose leaf tea and teabags.

How to make Iced Tea using loose leaf tea

Make a pot of tea using loose leaf tea, adding 1-2 teaspoons more than usual. Infuse to the desired strength, strain into a pitcher and add sugar or sweetener to taste. Set aside to cool or refrigerate.

Overnight version. . .

In a tall pitcher, add 2 teaspoons of loose leaf tea per cup. Fill the pitcher with cold water and place in the refrigerator overnight. Sweeten as desired.

How to make Iced Tea using tea bags

When making iced tea using tea bags, the tea doesn't go cloudy and it can be stored in the refrigerator for several days. Make a pot of tea using tea bags, adding an extra tea bag. Leave to infuse to the desired strength and then pour into a tall pitcher and set aside to cool. Add sugar or sweetener to taste.

Overnight version . . .

In a tall pitcher, add 1 tea bag per cup. Fill the pitcher with cold water and place in the refrigerator overnight. Sweeten as desired.

To serve your Iced Tea

Fill tall glasses with ice cubes or crushed ice then add the strained, chilled tea. Garnish with lemon or orange slices, kiwi fruit, fresh strawberries, or sprigs of mint leaves.

Tea Ice Cubes
Tea Ice Cubes are great to accompany your iced teas. They keep your tea from getting diluted. Simply add your favorite freshly brewed and cooled tea to ice cube trays and freeze until ready to serve. For extra flavor and a festive look you can add one or more of the following add-ins before freezing.

Ice Cube Add-ins: extra sugar, lemon twists, lemon juice, fresh mint leaves, sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or even rose petals.

"We're in love with roses. From the gentle scent of the first spring rose to the hand painted roses on repurposed furniture, we surround ourselves with the beautiful flower and its romance everywhere we can. In a bedroom, fabric pillows and slipcovers covered in romantic red roses and buds. On a sofa in the living room, needlepoint pillows rich in history and memories, with the most intricate rose designs. On a dresser or hallway table, a pink porcelain rose tucked into the corner of a vanity tray, reminiscent of a dresser tray that held my mother's prized perfume bottles.

Perhaps our love of roses springs from the memories they awaken. A broken china charm painted with a blushing rose evokes an image of the hand painted rose china my grandmother carefully brought out whenever I came for tea. Silk roses placed in a hand painted tea pot remind me of the fragrance of fresh cut roses from my mother's rose garden. Ribbons of hearts and roses across a folding fan recollect a fan she might have held on a hot Sunday morning in church.

Or perhaps it's the myriad of messages a rose can express without saying a word. A rose wreath on an embossed card adds the words "I care about you" to everything you write. A welcome wreath of pink and purple roses hung by the front door announces "Welcome!" to all who enter. Vintage postcards adorned with roses by some of our favorite rose artists from the 1800s, framed and displayed proudly in our homes, inspire our imaginations with possibilities that could have been penned. For whatever reason, one thing is sure. Romantic roses capture our hearts and fill our homes."

Back from World Tea Expo

I am back from World Tea Expo. I arrived home late Tuesday night because I opted to stay an extra day to pack and ship my display stuff home at a leisurely pace. Arriving at home at 10pm was a killer, though... I am still feeling the effects of the time zone changes and stress of participating in my first trade show. But, enough about that. I know that you really want to hear how the show went.

My best friend, Kathy, went with me to help man the booth. We flew in on Thurs. to allow time to make sure all the boxes arrived ahead of us and have time to plan around it if they didn't. Thankfully, we found our boxes waiting for us at the hotel. The exhibition hall opened for set-up on Friday at 8am and we arrived shortly after that to get an early start. Good move--it took us all day to set up the booth! Thank God for Kathy--I received some unsettling news from home that morning and my mind was not focused on the task at hand. Fortunately, we had spent time planning the booth decor and had at least a general idea of the look we wanted. We got it done by late afternoon (with many prayers from friends) and it didn't even look "cheesy"!

A bonus: Make Mine Pink friend, Erica of Meadow Street, had sent her beautiful line of tea-themed jewelry and hand-painted silk rose pins to the show to add another dimension and interest to the booth. She had coordinated her colors to match my line of products and it was a stunning complement! We scattered her roses around and they added that touch of class that made the booth look put together. (Everybody that saw her line raved about her handiwork!) Thanks, Erica! I could not have done this without your wise counsel, support and prayers. Though you weren't there physically, you were with me in spirit. (( ))

Another MMP friend, Lori (Katie's Rose Cottage), flew in just for moral support. But, I think she did some shopping while walking around, so keep your eyes peeled for some beautiful tea time treasures in her shop! Thank you, Lori--it meant the world to me having your opinion and just knowing you were there. (( ))

The show attendance was lower than expected. According to WTE staff, Swine flu and the recession both played a part in the lower numbers. Many who had registered to attend (and a few exhibitors) just did not come. In any case, I was pleasantly surprised at the number of people who stopped by my booth and told me that they had seen my ads in Tea Time magazine and had been waiting to see my product in person. It was thrilling to know that my name is out there! :)

Another thrill came from the booth next to mine. The banner was labeled Susan Rios Editions, but I assumed it was a dealer. I nearly fell over when I saw Susan walk in on Friday! I have been a fan for a long time and could not believe she was there in person! She and her assisant, Beverly, shared a booth with Glory International, the company that will be producing her beautiful new line of tea sets. They were all so friendly and down to earth. A treasured moment: Kathy bought a print of one of my favorite paintings and had Susan sign it for me! I will treasure it always...

Fun-loving Beverly thought we should wear my tea cozies as hats for advertising. I think she really got a kick out of Kathy and me on the last day--she thought I was too serious to do it--ha!

Speaking of attention-getting advertising--I had my mannequin, Annabelle, set-up at the entrance to the booth. Kathy and I had great fun watching all the reactions as people walked by and saw her. The men were especially amused. She had her photo taken more than any other display at the show!

Now to answer the $64,000. question--did I write orders? Yes. Was I happy with the outcome? Yes. Did I learn a lot? Yes. Will I consider doing it again next year? I don't know. It's a lot of work. The traveling is hard on the body. I hated Las Vegas (just not my cup of tea...). Ask me again in about 2 weeks--after I recover a bit more. ;)

World Tea Expo

It's time. I leave tomorrow for Las Vegas and World Tea Expo. The boxes full of product and display items have been shipped ahead. My list of last minute details is growing shorter by the minute. All that is left is to pack my suitcase and get on the plane.

Last March (2008), I was at the Country Living Women Entrepreneurs Event in Chicago, listening to speakers like Anna Griffin and Tamara Monosoff talk about their journey to success and wondering if I would ever be there. One of them (sorry, I can't remember which one) had us write down our dream for our business and share it with the person sitting next to us. (Do you remember that, Michelle?) I still have the notecard and look at it from time to time...it hasn't changed. It's still my dream.

So what does that have to do with WTE? A lot! That CL event was the beginning of believing in myself enough to take the leap of faith from dreaming to doing. Joyce Lucas of Make Mine Pink had encouraged several of us to apply to the Pitch Your Product portion of the event. Four of us took the challenge and all four were selected to Pitch. Though none of us was selected to be featured in Country Living, it was a milestone moment. It took courage to stand in front of an editor and sell my product--courage I didn't even know I had. The seminars afterwards reinforced the idea that dreams can become realities.

One of the key phrases from the CL seminar was "Leap and the net will appear." A seed was planted and 4 months later I signed up for an exhibitor's booth at World Tea Expo. Then I began the search for a manufacturer for my line of products. It has been a long process, but they were right--I leapt and the net did appear. Philippeans 4:13.
