<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Mother’s
Day. Although it has its roots in
honoring the mothers who lost sons in the Civil War, this special day has
evolved into a celebration for honoring and remembering all mothers. On May 8,
1914, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating the second Sunday in May as
Mother's Day. Since then, special customs have become associated with the
day—sending greeting cards, giving carnations or other flowers, offering
handmade or purchased gifts, going to church, taking mom out for lunch. Each family has its own traditions, but all
have one goal—to celebrate someone we call “Mother”.

my life, I was doubly blessed. God gave

those most precious gifts--my two mothers and celebrate the bond that I
have with my own daughter. You are cordially invited to attend a Vintage
Mother's Day Tea.

I began to plan this special Mother’s Day Tea, sweet memories from my childhood
flooded over me. One Mother’s Day in
particular stands out among the rest.
1964. I can still see my mother,
dressed in her prettiest dress, wearing gloves, a pillbox hat adorned with
flowers, and a corsage of roses, as we prepared to go to church. I can still smell her perfume and hear her
voice. I remember the pride I felt in
surprising her with the first gift that I had bought (together with my brother)
with my own money. I wanted to capture
the essence of that day. And so began
the search through my china cabinet, bedroom, and linen closet for a few of the
treasures that she loved and were passed down to me—a hat, her dresser tray and
perfume bottles, a favorite table cloth, her celluloid jewelry case, a crystal
vase, her wedding china, and a collection of mismatched teacups. As I step back
and survey the table, I think I have succeeded.
My fondest wish is that you will find inspiration to host your own
special celebration as you enter my dining room…<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">

Morning Has Broken

Morning has broken, like the first morning.
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning,
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word.

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlight from heaven.
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden,
Sprung in completeness where His feet pass.

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning.
Born of the one light Eden saw play.
Praise with elation, praise every morning;
God's re-creation of the new day.

Morning has broken, like the first morning.
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird.
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning,
Praise for them springing fresh from the Word.

My dad was an amazing man.
He had so many dimensions.

His poetry was a big part of who he was and many will
remember him because of a particular poem he wrote. For though he was a great oral communicator
of deep, intellectual thought, his poetry was his way of revealing his more
personal, emotional thoughts.

I loved his poetry and treasure it for the legacy it is—an
intimate portrait of who he was and what he believed. But what I treasured most was something much
simpler, his “comic strip and post-it note” love.

When I went away to college I think he spent more on postage
than he did on my tuition. Nearly every
day I would get something in the mail from him—a comic strip, or newspaper
article, sometimes a Dear Abby or Ann Landers column with a little yellow
post-it note attached. The message
varied but it always ended with “I love you, Karen. Love, Dad.”

When he got a computer, the post-it notes evolved into
e-mails. Daily he forwarded funnies and
political messages, and, of course, poems.
Our new mode of communication began with something called the “reply”
button and one line responses back and forth.
His always ended the same way as the post-it notes. “I love you, Karen. Love, Dad.”

The internet was down on Thursday, so he didn’t get to reply
to my reply to a poem he had posted the day before. But, when we talked by phone that evening, he
ended with those same cherished words-- “I love you, Karen.”

And that is what I will miss the most.

I love you, Daddy.

Love, Karen

As you probably know by now, I am a romantic at heart who loves the elegance of eras
past. It only follows that I love
afternoon tea and everything that goes along with it. I am also a collector who believes in collecting what I love and
living with it, not saving it for a special occasion. Therefore, over a period of many years of hunting
through antique shops, estate sales, flea markets, and charity stores with my
best friend, I built up a rather large collection of vintage linens, china and
decorative accessories that I use for entertaining. When I began to run out of display and
storage space in my home, I decided to combine my two passions, collecting
vintage china and planning tea parties, and open a new division of my
retail business. Later this month, my new
venture--a vintage china rental and
event styling company-- Sweet Necessi-Teas Events will dubut.

Although growing in popularity in Great Britain, Canada, and
Australia, this will be one of a handful of such companies in the US and the only one
in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Based in
the town of Double Oak in southern Denton County (Texas), we will supply
our vintage china and styling services to Flower Mound, Highland Village,
Lewisville, Grapevine, Southlake, and surrounding areas. Below are a few of my tea
party photos to get a feel for what Sweet Necessi-Teas Events is all
about.

I look forward to helping you create an elegant vintage
atmosphere for your next special occasion.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Contrary to popular belief, High Tea is not the same as Afternoon Tea. High Tea was enjoyed by the British working class as their evening supper, served at the “high” table with heartier fare than the tea sandwiches and scones that are now associated with afternoon tea parties.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">Afternoon Tea was served in the late afternoon to provide sustenance between lunch and the traditional late evening meal. (Afternoon Tea was also called Low Tea because it was usually taken in a sitting room where low tables were placed near sofas or chairs.)
When thinking about hosting a tea party, do you find yourself overwhelmed? Relax. It’s not as complicated as you think!

An Afternoon Tea Party is suitable for many celebrations. When you'd like to host a party that isn't as involved as a dinner party, a tea party can be the answer. It's an ideal format for a bridal or baby shower, a graduation or retirement party, a birthday celebration, or time to catch up with good friends.

The food is prepared before your guests arrive, and is either presented buffet style, or by passing plates of goodies at the table. The only thing you need to serve is the tea itself, leaving you plenty of time to relax and enjoy your guests.

Your guest list can include dozens of people or a few close friends with whom you'd like to share an intimate conversation.

In many parts of the world, tea time is an honored tradition of refinement and elegance where tables are set with china, silver, and white linens. These add polish and grace to the occasion and, in our fast-paced world, they remind us to slow down and enjoy the moments that add meaning to our lives.

Continuing the conversation on etiquette with a final excerpt from the Ladies Book of Etiquette and Manual of Politeness:

"Politeness, being based upon real kindness of heart, cannot exist where there is selfishness or brutality to warp its growth. It is founded upon love of the neighbor, and a desire to be loved, and to show love. Thus, where such pure, noble feelings do not exist, the mere forms of politeness become hypocracy and deceit."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yesterday, I promised to wrap up the conversation with my own thoughts about how this relates to afternoon tea. On the first day, I was lamenting that our society has lost something and it has diminished us. That something is politeness. Not just the outward facade of politeness, ("Yes, Ma'am" and "No, Sir") still seen in parts of the country; rather, true politeness as described in the book--based on the condition of the heart.
Etiquette and politeness are bound together because the first dictates that some form of the latter be employed. Afternoon tea is a great vehicle to teach the basics of etiquette, to discuss the concept of true politeness, and then, to practice hospitality.
It's not too late to reverse the course of our self-centered society. Start the trasformation. Invite a young person to tea.
Sweet Necessi-Teashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13209226028050752581noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34454448.post-61911505723470497732012-02-13T07:25:00.000-06:002012-02-13T07:25:48.769-06:00Etiquette--Part 2Continuing the conversation about the importance and essence of etiquette:
"Many believe that politeness is just a mask worn in the world to conceal bad passions and impulses, and to make a show of possessing virtues not really existing in the heart; thus, that politeness is merely hypocrisy and dissimulation. Do not believe this; be certain that those who profess such a doctrine are practising themselves the deceit they condemn so much. Such people scout politeness, because, to be truly a lady one must carry the principles into every circumstance of life, into the family circle, the most intimate friendship, and never forget to extend the gentle courtesies of life to everyone. This they find too much trouble, and so deride the idea of being polite and call it deceitfulness.
True politeness is the language of a good heart, and those possessing that heart will never, under any circumstances, be rude. They may not enter a crowded saloon (a large room or hall for receptions, public entertainment, or exhibitions) gracefully; they may be entirely ignorant of the forms of good society; they may be awkward at table, ungrammatical in speech; but they will never be heard speaking so as to wound the feelings of another; they will never be seen making others uncomfortable by seeking solely for their own personal convenience; they will always endeavor to set every one around them at ease; they will be self-sacrificing, friendly, unselfish; truly in word and deed, polite. Give to such a woman the knowledge of the forms and customs of society, teach her how to best show the gentle courtesies of life, and you have a lady, created by God, only indebted for the outward polish to the world."
I was thinking about how much things have changed in my lifetime. More specifically, the social graces or etiquette (or lack thereof) in our culture. What prompted my musings? While searching for a guide to tea etiquette, I ran across a book from the mid-19th century, The Ladies' Book of Etiquette, Fashion and Manual of Politeness: A Complete Handbook for the Use of the Lady In Polite Society by Florence Hartley. Her introduction is one of the most thought-provoking passages that I have read. Try as I might, I cannot help but feel saddened that this line of thought is so far from the norm today.
An excerpt:
In preparing a book of etiquette for ladies, I would lay down the first rule, "Do unto others as you would others should do to you." You can never be rude if you bear the rule always in mind, for what lady likes to be treated rudely? True Christian politeness will always be the result of an unselfish regard for the feelings of others, and though you may err in the ceremonious points of etiquette, you will never be impolite.
Politeness, founded upon such a rule, becomes the expression, in graceful manner, of social virtues. The spirit of politenessconsists in a certain attention to forms and ceremonies, which are meant both to please others and ourselves, and to make others pleased with us; a still clearer definition may be given by saying that politeness is goodness of heart put into daily practice; there can be no true politeness without kindness, purity, singleness of heart, and sensibility.
The May/June issue of Tea in Texas has just arrived. What a wonderful cover! I always enjoy the travel articles--they are always about places that are close to my heart and an enticement to take a weekend trip. A nice addition this month is a new feature, 2011 Best Tea Products. Imagine my surprise when I spotted my Afternoon Tea Society ( a subscription tea party service) listed! Wow!
If you live in North Texas, be sure to make plans to attend the 2011 Texas Tea Affair in Richardson on June 5. I attended last year with my daughter and we had a wonderful time! This year's featured speaker is author Millie Coleman, who will speak on the History of American Tea Rooms. There will also be a cooking demonstration by chef Carol Landers on Decadent Teatime Desserts. Finally, the event includes a chocolate and tea tasting and a Full Afternoon Tea. Need I say more? For tickets and more information, call 832-922-9335 or email Affair@TeainTexas.com. Teatime is by its very nature a combination of small luxuries arranged in social symmetry. And although tea for one is certainly a fine thing, the addition of a circle of dear friends to share it with ensures the whole is larger than its parts.
8And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. 12This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
13Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14"Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."
15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
16So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
Luke 2:8-20
Merry Christmas,
For the elegant woman— Elegant Tea Cup Tote
In days gone by, when a woman wanted to have a tea party, she might not have enough teacup and saucer sets for all her guests. As a result, it was not uncommon for a guest to be asked to bring her own teacup and saucer--often carrying her treasure in a beautiful case for protection.
This elegant tea cup tote is a wonderful way to take your favorite tea cup and saucer to your next tea party. Two layers of high loft quilt batting offer protection from breakage. A padded plate liner in coordinating fabrics keeps the cup and saucer separated. Fully lined. Reinforced bottom provides support and further protection. Luscious poly shantung (the look of silk without the care), 4” Venitian lace, pearl braid trim and a hand-crafted ceramic rose button add a touch of romance. A drawstring closes the tote and provides a handle to carry your precious cargo. Holds a 6” saucer and tea cup. (Tea cup and saucer shown for display only and are not included.) An added bonus is a lovely coordinating, lace-trimmed napkin. No tea parties in the near future? It could also be used as a purse! Too sweet! Dimensions: 6 ½”w x 7”h
I mainly went out of curiosity. The home has been bought and sold several times over the 19 years that we have lived down the street. I had never been inside this house, nor knew the most recent owners. I only knew that they were elderly.
As I walked from room to room, I began to feel a sense of regret that I had never taken the time to knock on the door and introduce myself. I could see that the lady of the house must have been a very elegant woman. I think we would have had much in common. The kitchen and dining room were full of crystal, china, and fine linens. Fine antique furniture graced every room. Her closets held evening gowns, shoes, beaded purses, and gloves. The bookshelves were laden with classic literature, fashion magazines from distant eras, and cookbooks. A bedroom had been converted into a sewing room which also held hat-making equipment. And tea sets were in every room.
If I had the resources, I would have bought it all. However, I could not, so I chose a few of the most beautiful pieces. My favorite--a handpainted Bavarian luncheon set for two:
Sweet Necessi-Teashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13209226028050752581noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34454448.post-35147688069671581822010-10-30T08:39:00.000-05:002010-10-30T08:39:01.742-05:00One year laterOne year ago today, my father called in the wee hours of the morning to tell me that my mom had passed away. A few hours later, I was on an airplane headed to Houston. We buried my mom on Monday. On Tuesday I was asked to speak at another memorial service the following day. What I wrote was an attempt to capture the essence of who she was. She was everything I said, but try as I might, I could not find the words to express who she was to me. She was my Mom. She gave birth to me. Held me. Nurtured me. Fussed at me. Bragged about me. Nagged me. Encouraged me. Questioned me. Advised me. Taught me. Cried with me. Laughed with me. Hugged me. Butted heads with me. Sacrificed for me. Loved me…unconditionally.
It’s been a year and my heart still hurts from the hole that she left.
And from
questions I cannot ask her;
things I cannot tell her;
hugs I cannot give her…yet.
But someday we will be together again…and then I will.Sweet Necessi-Teashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13209226028050752581noreply@blogger.com0
